While the 4th of July celebrates American independence from Great Britain, Black people were still enslaved until Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. News didn’t reach Galveston, Texas for 2 1/2 years! On June 19th, 1865 ALL AMERICANS became free. Juneteenth: Freedom Day.
